Last night, as police sought stormed Bushwick Houses, looking for Louis “Baby” Ortiz, suspect in the shooting of NYPD Officer Kevin Brennan, who had a bullet in the base of his skull that needed to be removed… a hipster rode his bike though a police blockade in Bushwick.
No word from Matt on whether the biker was riding a fixie, the fixed gear bike that is statistically correlated with presence of hipsters, according to Priceonomics.
Brennan and his partner were pursuing a man with a gun last night when he was shot at 370 Bushwick Avenue on the Bushwick Houses project first floor. A weeping eyewitness, Jenny Rios, said she saw an officer yelling “I got hit! I got hit!” and bleeding from the mouth.
Bushwick descended into chaos as dozens or more police cars descended on the projects, and apartment dwellers, disoriented by wailing sirens and circling helicopters, went outside to investigate (or stayed in and twittered, or both).
Brennan was rushed to Bellevue Hospital. Later, police took into custody 21-year-old Hispanic male named Louis “Baby” Ortiz, wanted for questioning regarding a New Year’s Day homicide.
The press conference with Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly turned weird as Kelly held up a bloody bullet fragment he said came from skull of NYPD officer Kevin Brennan.
Brennan was in pain, but expected to live. “God, in this case, was kind,” Mayor Bloomberg said.
